K&W Farms Cover Crop Project
Over 500 acres of cereal rye cover crops have been planted on corn rotation fields in Martin Township. With cost-share assistance from the Gun Lake Tribe of Indians and the technical services of the Gun River Watershed Project we have stopped over 150 tons of sediment from reaching the Gun River and it’s tributaries.
Without cover crops on fields soil is very susceptible to erosion and the development of gullies. Excessive soil loss can decrease crop yields and increase the need for fertilizer on spring plantings. A special thanks to Wes Visser, from K&W Farms for his time and patience to get conservation on the ground. And of course we also hope his yields increase and fertilizer and herbicide needs reduce because of the planted cover crop.
